
Parental Leave / Working Mother Deferment
You must have have an outstanding balance on a Federal Family Education Loan Program that was made before July 1, 1993, or had a balance that was made before July 1, 1993, at the time you obtained a loan disbursed on or after July 1, 1993.
Maximum Time Limit:
Parental Leave - 6 months
Working Mother - 1 year
Eligibility Criteria
Parental Leave Deferment - To qualify for this deferment, a borrower must request it and provide to the lender a statement certifying that:
The borrower is pregnant or caring for his or her newborn child, or caring for a child immediately following his or her adoption of that child.
The borrower will not be attending school during this period.
The borrower will not be working full time (at least 30 hours of work per week that is expected to last at least 3 months) during this period.
The borrower has been enrolled at least half-time during the 6 months
before the date on which the deferment should begin.
Working Mother Deferment - To qualify for this deferment, a borrower must request it and provide the lender with:
A statement that she is the mother of a preschool-age child; that she entered or is reentering the work force no more than one year before the beginning date of the period for which the deferment is being sought; and that she is currently employed full time (at least 30 hours of work per week that is expected to last at least 3 months) in a position for which she receives wages of no more than $1.00 per hour more than the minimum wage.
Documentation of the child's age (such as birth or baptismal certificate).
