The number of monthly payments is pre-set to 120 based on the standard 10-year repayment plan for student loans. The interest rate is pre-set to the current unsubsidized Stafford loan rate of 6.80 percent. Student loans have different fixed or variable interest rates depending on the loan type and the date the loan was disbursed.
