The U.S.S. OGSLP Cruise…Something for Everyone! - The OGSLP Crew wants to thank all of you who joined us for our recent cruise from the Port of Norman. Even though it was stormy on the decks, no one reported getting seasick and we don't think anyone went overboard.

House Bills Focus on Loan Forgiveness for Teachers, and Accountability in Teacher Training Programs - The House Committee on Education and the Workforce passed two bills (HR 2211 & HR 438) on June 10 to strengthen the teaching profession, marking the beginning of legislation to reauthorize the Higher Education Act. Both bills will now be considered by the entire House.

What A Deal…Student Loan Interest Rates Going Down, Down, Down - Effective July 1, interest rates in the student loan programs will hit historic lows. The new rate for Stafford borrowers in repayment will be 3.42%, while students who are currently enrolled, within the six-month grace period or in deferment will have a 2.82% rate. The new rate for PLUS borrowers will be 4.22%.

Military Exceptions for OTAG - At the May 30 meeting of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, a recommendation was approved to provide an exception to the OTAG application receipt deadline for students ordered to active military duty and for active duty military personnel whose duty station was changed as a result of a military mobilization.

New Research…. - New focus group research released June 2003 by the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education attempts to explain the discrepancy of how Hispanic students are much less likely to obtain college degrees than non-Hispanic whites or African-American students.

HEA Should Also Serve Low-Income Adults - "Congress should consider changes that would help low-income workers upgrade their job skills when it renews federal student aid programs later this year, including possibly creating a completely new program tailored to working adults, a new policy paper recommends.

ED Seeks Broad Input for New National Technology Plan - The U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced in May that it is calling for broad participation and input from a wide array of education stakeholders in crafting a new National Education Technology Plan, as required by the recently enacted No Child Left Behind law.

Errata - During our "Life of the Loan Presentation" at the spring OASFAA conference we made reference to exit counseling being "required" 30 days before a borrower ceases at least half-time enrollment. This is considered to be a good exit interview practice but it is not a requirement.
