2003 Interest Rate Update: On Friday, December 14, 2001, S. 1762, the bill by U.S. Senator Tim Johnson to fix the 2003 interest rate problem passed the Senate by unanimous consent and moved over to the House. However, OGSLP has learned that although the bill received 257 yes votes in the House, this was not enough to meet the required two-thirds for passage. It is expected that the measure will be brought up early in the next session.

Some NSLDS outages slated to begin December 21, 2001: Schools and guarantors that participate in federal education loan programs are reminded by the Department of Education of upcoming outages that will affect some National Student Loan Data Systems (NSLDS) services.

PLUS FAFSA Requirement Removed: Jeff Baker, Director of Program Development for SFA, has confirmed that previous information provided by the U.S. Department of Education (ED) has changed concerning a new requirement for PLUS applicants. ED earlier considered requiring all PLUS applicants to file a FAFSA. This would have included those students not otherwise seeking Title IV aid and whose parents wanted to borrow a PLUS loan for 2002-2003.

FED UP Chart on Web: Last spring, the Honorable Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, Chairman, Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness, asked industry participants to share their list of burdensome regulations that needed revision or elimination. This project is known as the "Upping the Effectiveness of our Federal Student Aid Programs," or "Fed. Up" for short. Since that time, many regulations have been identified by the financial aid community and are being compiled by the subcommittee and are posted on their web site.

OGSLP will be closed on December 24th, 25th and January 1st. Happy Holidays to everyone!
