
Temporary Total Disability Deferment
You must have have an outstanding balance on a Federal Family Education Loan Program that was made before July 1, 1993, or had a balance that was made before July 1, 1993, at the time you obtained a loan disbursed on or after July 1, 1993.
Maximum Time Limit: 3 years
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for this deferment, the borrower must be unable to work and earn money or go to school for at least 60 days in order to recover from an injury or illness and not be requesting the deferment based on a condition that existed before applying for the loan, unless the condition has since substantially deteriorated, and not be requesting the deferment based on an uncomplicated pregnancy. For a borrower to be eligible for the deferment based on a dependent's or spouse's disability, the spouse or dependent must require at least 90 days of continuous nursing or similar care from the borrower which prevents the borrower from securing full-time employment of at least 30 hours per week in a position expected to last at least three months.
Eligibility for this deferment must be re-certified every six months. A borrower may receive a combined total of 3 years of disability deferment for both the borrower's own condition and the condition of the borrower's dependent(s) or spouse.
