
Teacher Shortage Area Deferment
You must have an outstanding balance on a Federal Family Education Loan Program that was made before July 1, 1993, or had a balance that was made before July 1, 1993, at the time you obtained a loan disbursed on or after July 1, 1993.
Maximum Time Limit: 3 years
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for a teacher shortage area deferment (also called a targeted teacher deferment), a borrower must teach full-time in a public or nonprofit private elementary or secondary school in a geographic region, grade level, academic, instructional, subject matter or discipline classified shortage area as defined by the U.S. Department of Education.
To receive the deferment, a borrower must obtain certification from the chief administrative officer (principal) of the school in which the borrower is teaching certifying that he or she is teaching in a teacher shortage area.
The U.S. Department of Education has designated the following areas as teacher shortage areas for Oklahoma during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 school years.
