
Internship/Residency Deferment
You must have have an outstanding balance on a Federal Family Education Loan Program that was made before July 1, 1993, or had a balance that was made before July 1, 1993, at the time you obtained a loan disbursed on or after July 1, 1993.
Maximum Time Limit: 2 years
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for this deferment, a borrower must request it and provide the lender with a statement from an authorized official of the organization with which the borrower is undertaking the eligible internship or residency program certifying the following:
That the internship or residency program is a supervised training program that requires the completion of at least a bachelor’s degree before acceptance into the program.
That the borrower has been accepted into the program.
The anticipated dates on which the borrower will begin and complete the
program, or begin and complete the minimum period of participation
in the program that the state requires before an individual may be
certified for professional practice or service, whichever is less.
